Wimbledon Singles Tournament Excitement Ends

The Professional Tennis circuit had some shocking news this year. Once again, the sisters Venus went to the women's singles finals. Once again, Roger Federer took the men's singles title. Much to the dismay of the community, a death was seen - Mathieu Montcourt perished due to cardiac arrest. Still, the Wimbledon singles games are over, and the winners brought some surprise, some repeats.

Roger Federer won his third title of the year in the Men's singles this year. Out of all the male players in the Grand Slam titles, Federer has surpassed them all. This is his fifteenth Grand Slam title, skyrocketing his professional career to record breaking proportions. He recently broke the record previously held by Pete Sampras. Andy Roddick put up a good fight, but Federer's performance was too much for the American player to contend with.

Venus and Serena Williams met in the finals, continuing the familial rivalry between the two. They have played against each other 11 times in the Grand Slam tournaments, and have an overall match record of 11-10, with the wins in Serena's favor. They have met in Grand Slam Finals 8 times, with Serena beating Venus 6 out of the 8 times. Serena took an additional victory this year, giving her another win on her record.

The Championships, Wimbledon are over, but the excitement of the Tennis community will continue throughout the year. This was the first year where the Centre Court of the Wimbledon fields was covered, and next year should be equally great. The Williams sisters should once again meet on the field, and the community has mourned the passing of Montcourt, donating a moment of silent to their lost competitor.
